Description:

This degree offers you more than just language skills. Its focus on culture means that graduates are excellent communicators, able to meet the challenges of an international environment. If you are interested in specialising in modern foreign languages, combining your language skills with an understanding of the literature, history and culture of the countries in which these languages are spoken, then the new and exciting BA (International) Modern Languages could be for you. This four-year programme offers you the chance to develop excellent linguistic proficiency in two or more world languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. You can study any of these languages at an advanced (post-Leaving Cert or equivalent) level and you can also take Italian, Spanish or Portuguese from beginner level.

In addition to deepening your language skills, the BA (International) Modern Languages degree offers you the chance to develop your critical faculties and your intercultural awareness. A crucial part of this is the fully credited year abroad which you will spend at a host university, during which time you will have a unique opportunity to be immersed in another culture. As a student of modern languages you will be ‘at home’ in the UCD School of Languages & Literatures, where almost all our teaching takes place in small groups. The close contact with our staff, and the opportunity to work both in groups as well as independently, will facilitate your development as an autonomous and self-reflective learner.
